Golfer’s Paradise

Monday, September 27th, 2010

After a few weeks of nasty weather,  I took the opportunity yesterday to hone my golf skills on one of New Zealand’s best courses, Jacks Point.  Although the course is still recovering from the harsh winter,  I still enjoyed playing this amazing (and difficult!)  golf course amongst some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.  It’s prime position in between Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountain range make it a perfect location for some golf course photography so I took some time throughout the round to scout for possible locations.  I’ll be returning in a month or so when the fairways are mown and the greens are perfect to get some shots.

New Zealand Update #2

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Winter has officially ended but not here in NZ.  The last week and a half has been such a crazy time, with temps only reaching 5 degrees C on several days, and feeling a lot colder when considering the wind chill factor.  New Zealand’s South island has had an awful month, as if the Christchurch Earthquake and Fox Glacier plane crash weren’t enough, now the farmers are in trouble with 100s of thousands of lambs killed due to the bitterly cold conditions.  Hopefully things can return to normal quickly for everyone’s sake.  I can certainly sympathise with the residents of Christchurch, since the big quake struck 3 weeks ago they’ve had to endure over 800 AFTERSHOCKS, as well as a couple of ground shaking Metallica concerts!

Well, I’ve only just realised that I really don’t have much time left over here.  With a trip back to Oz in early November and then straight into the American Southwest for 10 days, my planned mid December exit from NZ is fast approaching, so from next week until mid December I’ll be going non stop photographing locations (NZ Spring & USA Autumn) at their absolutely most stunning seasonal best.  I have my long list of locations and preferred times of day and year all ready to go.  This time of year is a landscape photographers dream, and I honestly can’t wait to go exploring again, regardless of weather.

Nice Day………NOT!! ):

9 days so far of heavy snow, gale force winds, driving rain, hail, sleet, and even a tornado thrown in for a bit of fun!    Only a few more days to go……….hopefully.     My golf clubs are getting impatient!

“Megastorm” approaching!

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

A massive storm system the size of Australia is approaching New Zealand from the West.  Gale force winds, heavy rain and snow are forecast for the next few days at least.  This is just the type of weather I’ve been waiting for to top up the mountain snow, and get those hills beautifully green for spring photography.  The next few months are going to be spectacular!   It’s time to dust off the camera’s and stock up on film!  From early October until mid- December it’s all go for me, until I head back home……..wherever that may be.

Epson/NZ Professional Photography Awards 2010

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

I thought I’d wander down to the Millenium Hotel this morning to check out my results in the New Zealand Pro Photo Awards.  As I’m living in New Zealand at the moment, I took the opportunity to enter my prints from the Canon APPA’s in the NZ comp. in the hope I could bag a few more accolades over here.  As far as I could tell I had three prints come away with Bronze awards, so I’m happy to have been successful given it was a relatively late decision to enter.
