This question has to be asked. Does Tasmania have a problem with an overpopulation of snakes? You see, without doubt, out of all the places I’ve travelled to, Tasmania wins hands down for snake encounters on the trail and at the moment they are extremely active out there. And it’s not as if they are the harmless variety either. DEADLY TIGER SNAKES and COPPERHEAD’s are everywhere, and after been bitten on the boot by a Tiger snake on the hike into Wineglass Bay in Oct.2007, I’ve learned to just keep my eyes constantly on the trail ahead at all times while hiking. If you have to look around, stop and look, and be very aware!

I have to say that my first 4 visits to these falls over the years had resulted in no photo’s I was overly happy with, and given that Liffey Falls are up amongst the best that Tasmania has to offer, it was with great joy that I finally came away with some quality photographs very late on Sunday arvo. This was such a great shoot…….No other people in sight to stifle my creativity! Just me and my brand new gum boots sloshing through the freezing water in the breathtaking Tasmanian wilderness!

I’ve decided that from next week I will be basing myself out of the Tasmanian city of Launceston for probably the next six months or so. After travelling constantly since early August, I feel a little depleted, so a home base of some sort to get fit again, plan my next photo expedition, and explore the Tassie landscape in depth sounds like a good plan to me. I’m really quite familiar with many area’s of Tasmania, having spent a lot of time in the last few years searching for photo locations across the state, but now I’m equipped with a 4WD, the out of the way locations will suddenly become a whole lot easier to access.

I used the International Loupe Awards this year to test out some of my latest images in competition in preparation for next years QLD/Aust. Pro Photo Awards. The Loupe awards are an internet based comp. highlighting some of the best photography from around the globe so it was good to come away with some winners. In the end, 7 of my 8 entered photo’s won awards so considering all the images were edited on my laptop in a dumpy hotel in the middle of Nevada I was more than happy with the results.

Canon Japan has had an enormous task on it’s hands in the wake of the devastating earthquake/tsunami earlier this year, with the supply and development of new lenses and camera’s being delayed several months as they attempted to get things back on track. So it was with great delight that I finally managed to get my hands on the very rare Canon 8-15mm Fisheye lens today. After searching unsuccessfully high and low for this lens whilst in the U.S last month, I finally tracked one down here in Australia and am keen to explore the capabilities of this interesting new lens in the coming months.
