With only a couple of months left here in Tassie, I’ll be out and about as the weather cools looking for some photo opportunities across the state. In the past few months I’ve passed up many locations as the dry conditions in many regions aren’t perfect, but I’m hoping that some decent rain and cool temps. will reinvigorate the waterfalls and get that moss growing rapidly. For me the moss on the rocks is an important key ingredient of photographing Tasmanian waterfalls at their best. Cradle Mountain is next on the agenda with the annual ‘turning of the fagus’ happening around late April – early May. The deciduous beech fagus undergoes a colour change at this time every year transforming the highlands into a spectacular sea of yellow and red as the autumn transitions into winter. I’m also crossing my fingers for some decent snowfalls at Cradle before I leave in mid -June.

In the second half of the year I’ll be heading into the Kimberley and the Pilbara regions of Western Australia for an in depth photographic expedition to document the raw beauty and uniqueness of the more inaccessible Australian landscapes. In my opinion these two area’s are the most beautiful in Australia with Karijini National Park in the Pilbara being my absolute favourite Australian photo location. Dragging yourself out of a tent pre-dawn in minus something degrees has never been so enjoyable in this stunning place! Being entirely self-sufficient in these remote regions is vital so this time equipped with a fully set up 4WD allows me to negotiate the more difficult access locations and not limit my time at each destination, and more time equals better photography.

I’m also in the process of researching my options for another US adventure around October with this time the states of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama on the radar. The 469 mile long Blue Ridge Parkway is landscape photographers heaven around this time and is regarded as one of the world’s most spectacular drives, so again the lure of America in all of it’s Autumn glory (or at any time) is simply irresistible to me as a photographer. I love the American landscape…

Delighted to have three of my four entries win Silver honours in this years Epson Queensland Professional Photography Awards. Last years 9000 mile odyssey across America to Canada and back has reaped some rewards with the winning entries captured in Oregon, Wyoming and Colorado. In recent times I’ve been experimenting with a more abstract style of image using different camera and processing techniques, so the positive feedback of competition success has me inspired for the upcoming Canon Australian Professional Photography Awards in May. Check out the winners below -
